Decide What Must Stay Powered

A standby generator is permanently installed and works with an automatic transfer switch. When utility power fails, the system can start and transfer supported loads without manual connection. Installation planning may involve the electrical service, gas or propane supply, generator clearances, exhaust direction, flood or snow conditions, noise considerations, trenching, permits, and inspections. The generator location should be evaluated before equipment is ordered.
Essential-Circuit or Whole-Property Coverage?
Essential-circuit coverage prioritizes the systems needed for safety and basic operation. It can reduce generator and fuel requirements while keeping the property functional. Broader coverage offers more convenience but may require a larger generator, more fuel capacity, or controls that temporarily shed high-demand loads.
“Whole house” does not always mean every appliance can run simultaneously. Ask which loads are included, which are managed, and what occupants need to do during an extended outage.
Choose a Practical Fuel Strategy
Standby generators commonly use natural gas or propane, subject to equipment and site requirements. Portable generators may use gasoline, propane, or multiple fuels. Availability during a regional outage, on-site storage, runtime, maintenance, and cold-weather performance all matter. Fuel-system sizing should be coordinated with a qualified provider where required.
Transfer Equipment and Electrical Compatibility
The transfer switch is a central safety component. Its configuration must match the service, generator, grounding arrangement, supported loads, and utility requirements. Older or crowded panels may require electrical work before backup power can be integrated cleanly. If a panel upgrade is already planned, coordinating both projects can produce a more intentional system.
Maintenance and Outage Readiness
Backup power is only useful if it starts when needed. Follow the manufacturer’s exercise, inspection, oil, battery, and service schedule. Keep portable-generator fuel managed safely, test the connection procedure, and make sure household or staff members understand which loads the system can support.
