An electrical panel upgrade is not routine maintenance with a fixed replacement date. It becomes appropriate when the existing equipment is unsafe, damaged, unreliable, obsolete, or unable to support planned loads. These eight signs can help homeowners identify when to schedule a professional evaluation.
1. Breakers Trip Repeatedly
A breaker that trips is doing its protective job. Repeated trips can point to an overloaded circuit, a damaged appliance, a wiring fault, or another issue that needs diagnosis. A larger panel will not fix every tripping problem, and installing a larger breaker without verifying the wiring can create a serious hazard.
Record which breaker trips and what was running at the time. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that will not remain on, feels hot, smells unusual, or shows signs of damage.
2. The Panel Shows Heat, Corrosion, or Physical Damage
Rust, water staining, buzzing, crackling, scorch marks, melted components, or unusual heat require prompt attention. Water and electrical equipment are a dangerous combination. Avoid removing the panel cover or touching damaged equipment; contact a licensed electrician for evaluation.
If there is smoke, active arcing, or an immediate fire concern, leave the area and contact emergency services.
3. You Have a Fuse Panel or Older Equipment
Age alone does not determine condition, but older panels deserve closer review. A fuse system, unavailable replacement components, known equipment concerns, modifications by previous owners, or years of additions can make replacement advisable. An electrician can identify the panel manufacturer, service rating, condition, and evidence of improper work.
4. There Is No Safe Space for New Circuits
An apparently empty position does not guarantee room for another circuit. The panel must allow the breaker type and configuration, and the electrical service must have capacity for the load. Crowded wiring, improper tandem breakers, multiple conductors under terminals not listed for them, or add-on subpanels may indicate that the system needs correction or reorganization.
5. You Are Adding an EV Charger
A Level 2 EV charger is a substantial continuous load. The electrician should perform the required load evaluation and review the service, panel, charger output, wire route, and future plans. Depending on the findings, the project may use existing capacity, a lower charging rate, approved load management, or a service and panel upgrade.
6. You Are Electrifying Major Appliances
Heat pumps, electric water heaters, induction ranges, dryers, hot tubs, workshops, and other large loads can change the home’s electrical demand. Planning these upgrades together helps avoid installing equipment twice or discovering capacity constraints late in a renovation.
7. You Are Renovating or Adding Living Space
A kitchen remodel, addition, accessory dwelling unit, finished basement, or major commercial build-out often requires new circuits and code updates. The existing panel should be evaluated during design so electrical capacity, utility coordination, equipment location, and permitting are included in the project plan.
8. You Want Solar, Battery Storage, or Backup Power
Solar, batteries, generators, and smart panels interact with the service and distribution equipment in different ways. Existing panel ratings, bus capacity, transfer equipment, grounding, utility rules, and backup priorities all affect the design. Coordinating these systems early can produce a cleaner, more adaptable installation.
Does Every Home Need a 200-Amp Panel?
No. Service size should follow a code-compliant load calculation and the property’s actual and planned demands. A 200-amp service is common in modern homes, but some properties need less and larger or more complex properties may need more. The correct scope may involve a panel replacement at the same service size, a service upgrade, a subpanel, load management, or repairs rather than wholesale replacement.
What Happens During a Panel Evaluation?
An electrician will typically review the service rating, panel manufacturer and condition, breaker compatibility, grounding and bonding, available spaces, visible defects, existing major loads, and proposed new equipment. Utility involvement, permits, inspections, meter equipment, and site access may affect the final scope.
